Carbon Project
As a company, we are always striving to ensure that our business’ impact on the environment is kept as low as possible. We commissioned a carbon audit of our Brighton offices and have offset the 10.0 tonnes CO2e we generated during 2010/11 with credits from the prize winning Kikonda Forest Reserve in Uganda.
What is the Kikonda Forest Reserve?
In a country where illegal logging has dramatically reduced the area of natural forest, the Kikonda Forest Reserve employs and trains local people to restore and expand forest areas through tree planting initiatives.
Kikonda is the first project worldwide to be certified with the CarbonFix Standard and the Climate, Community and Biodiversity Alliance (CCBA) Standard for its positive social and ecological impact. Spanning an area of 120 km², the project provides a secure workplace and source of income for over 600 people.
More than one million trees have been planted on an area equivalent to approximately 2,000 football fields, which will store more than 200,000 tonnes of CO2.
Trees not only absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, they provide a vital habitat for animals. To protect rare species and regenerate natural habitats, the project has set aside over 20% of its area for conservation purposes.
The project provides timber for the local market and acts as an important factor in controlling and ultimately reducing illegal logging across Uganda, Congo and Sudan.
